So wrapped up in Montol prep it hadn’t occurred to me that half of our followers on FB and Instagram are new and weren’t even here last year … looking at their profiles I think a few of them weren’t even born yet.
My bad.
So, what is The Gathering?
For Montol, traditionally groups of friends get together to help each other make costumes and masks and devise their contribution to the Revels – songs, games, satire whatever you want – as they have for the Twelve Days of Christmas in Penzance for generations – and, having developed a theme, an idea, an aesthetic, choose to enshrine it with rules and rituals and a name and form a Guild.
On the 30th November, just three weeks before Montol, we look forward to meeting you all at The Gathering – new guilds, old guilds, musicians, performers and dancers, new peeps and old hands – so you can sign the Ancient Montol Ledger – a record stretching back into the mists of time (all the way back to 2023 in fact).
Join the Cornmarket Revellers, the ‘Gyptians, Raffidy Dumitz Band, the Scaleybacks, the Frolicking Fishy Folk, the Radical Ramblers, the Hwymm Hwamm Hyggas, the Hedgerows, The Osses and their lionhearted and pertinacious Teasers – in signing The Ledger
Montol is all about taking part, not watching – so dress up, dress down but you must be in disguise.
And we will be offering workshops, at Pixel in town, in traditional dancing, costume, mask-making and Cornish bunches in December, to help you on your way.
Together we all help make it the magical happening that it is.
Remember – everyone is welcome – even if you aren’t registering a guild or group – come along anyway – there will be merch, merry meetings and music, gossip and news and Mahogany to help stoke the fires of Montol!
